Are You A Candidate?

Do you hate the way your smile looks and want a beautiful new grin? Has your self-confidence taken a hit due to your unattractive, damaged or missing teeth? Is your oral health otherwise decent? If you answered yes to these questions than you may be a good candidate for dental implants. However, it is important to note that because each patient is unique and only Dr. Fenton can determine if you are a good candidate for dental implants.

Before you start any tooth replacement treatment, Dr. Fenton will conduct a comprehensive examination. This examination is very important because it allows Dr. Fenton to study your teeth and overall oral health, as well as discuss your needs, desires and options for dental implants.

What Makes A Good Implant Candidate?

The ideal candidate for dental implants should be a healthy patient with one or more missing teeth. But what other factors make a patient ideal?

1) Willingness to follow doctor’s orders. Patients should be willing and able to follow their doctor’s orders after their implant procedure. Moreover, patients should expect to follow doctors implicitly in order to achieve successful dental implants treatment. Failure to follow doctor’s orders could potentially result in problems with healing or possible implant failure.

2) Adequate jawbone and gum tissues. Dental implants are a superior tooth replacement option that works by implanting artificial tooth roots directly into the patient’s jawbone. For the implant to be supported properly, the patient’s jawbone must be sufficiently dense and the gum tissue must be healthy. Patients can get supplemental procedures if these tissues are inadequate, but it will add extra time and expense.

3) Good overall health. Healing from oral surgery can be difficult if a patient is suffering from other health issues. Accordingly, patients with diabetes, bone diseases, addictions or smokers are less preferred candidates for dental implant surgery. It is not impossible to get dental implants if you have underlying health problems or addictions, but a healthy patient will heal better and usually have faster and better results.

4) Excellent oral hygiene practices.  Tooth replacement treatment will be not be successful if a patient does not practice good oral hygiene. More importantly, gum and bone tissue will not heal properly a patient does not keep their mouth healthy and clean. Patients should expect to brush and floss at a minimum of once a day and to visit their dentist regularly. Patients should also take special care to inspect the implant area often to ensure there are no irregularities.
