History of Oktoberfest

Traditionally, Oktoberfest is celebrated from the third weekend in September to the first Sunday of October. As we’ve adapted this tradition, we end up celebrating all October long. Oktoberfest dates back to October 1810 when Crown Prince Ludwig married Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen. Festivities were held in front of the city gates with Munich citizens celebrating the royal event. The end of the event featured horse races and a festival for the royal family. The next year, horse races were again hosted and the tradition of Oktoberfest was born.
